“SOUTHERN TASTE – SOUTHERN TECHNOLOGY“
NZART ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2008
QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND 30 MAY – 2 JUNE DUNEDIN
The Otago Branch, hosts of the 2008 NZART Annual Conference in Dunedin, invites NZART members and their partners to join us at this year’s conference.
VENUE
This year’s conference will be held at the Southern Cross Scenic Circle Hotel, situated on the corner of High and Princes Streets, in the central city, just south of the Octagon. All of the official NZART business, forums, morning and afternoon teas, lunches, together with the Saturday and Sunday night buffet dinners, will all be held here which is ideally suited to this type of function.
PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME
On Saturday 31 May the main event is the Annual General Meeting. Following the afternoon tea is the AREC meeting, plus lectures and forums with our guest speakers. The evening buffet dinner will follow pre dinner drinks, these beginning at about 1800 hours. There will be a special dinner speaker between the entree and main course; something we believe hasn’t been done before. Sunday 1 June from 0900 will see the other Annual General Meetings for WARO, SPAM, and OTC. Further lectures and forums will be for but not limited to Contesting, DX, and entry–level licences in New Zealand, mobile HF antennas and Satellite Communications in Antarctica.
ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMME
We think you will really appreciate what is being planned over the two days available. Our plans include visits to Cadbury World, Speights Brewery, Olveston Stately Home, Baldwin Street – the world’s steepest, the Railway Station – said to be one of the most photographed buildings in the world, the now famous Butterfly Heaven at the museum, and the just opened Chinese Gardens. and New Zealand’s only castle – Larnach Castle. On the Otago Peninsular you should be able to see the famous yellow eyed penguin, albatross and fur seals, and there is a possibly of viewing the disappearing Armstrong gun at Tairoa Head. Also close by is New Zealand’s only castle – Larnach Castle – which has a proud history all of it’s own. The views from here can only be described as stunning and awesome.
In the city you will notice some of the finest historic and heritage Edwardian and Victorian architecture in the southern hemisphere.
For those arriving early or staying later you may enjoy a trip on the famous Taieri Gorge Railway or a harbour cruise on the Monarch launch.
REMITS
This year there are at least 10 that we are aware of so discuss these at your various club meetings and have all your arguments ready as the President may have to restrict discussion time if we are to get through all this business.
PARKING
Negotiations are ongoing with parking site owners but nothing has eventuated yet. We will attempt to keep you informed through our website. However, there is free street parking up High Street and on some streets off it plus some further south along Princes Street a few minutes walk from the venue. The only parking available at the Southern Cross Hotel venue is for paying accommodation guests.
ENTERTAINMENT
Yes, there will be some, and we hope you are looking forward to experiencing a real Haggis ceremony with our own club pipers!
GUEST SPEAKERS
Our keynote speaker on Saturday morning will be Gary Bold who is well known to many of you but do you know what he was up to many years ago? If you’re here, you’re going to find out.
John Tagg from Blis Technologies is a very entertaining communicator and is really appreciated by students and all who hear him. You will catch him here as our Saturday dinner speaker. BLIS stands for Bacteriocin–Like Inhibitory Substance which is what makes our Probiotics: “The Next Generation of Advanced Probiotics”. Anyone got a sore throat?
Emeritus Professor Dick Dowden has an interest in Radio, Space and Atmospheric Physics. His power point presentation will cover aspects of VLF radio location of lightning by time of group arrival. (TOGA) Dick stared all this right here in Dunedin. We’ve seen Dick’s presentation and believe it’s something you shouldn’t miss.
Stuart Watchman ZL2TW, your NZART Vice President, will lead a forum on entry–level licences in New Zealand. Stuart is also well known for his Training DVDs for budding amateurs.>
Bede McCormick ZL4KX/KC4AAC, an ex Radio Inspector, has recently returned from his latest trip to Antarctica where he was located at the US Palmer Station site as a Satellite Communications Engineer. He will share his experiences on the ice and show you some awesome photographic images. There is a rumour out there that Bede declined an option of similar work in Iraq. Bede’s second forum topic will cover aspects of mobile HF antennas.
The list is not complete at this stage.
REGISTRATION CHECK INS
These will commence Friday evening from 1800 in the Port O’Call Bar at the venue. You will find entrances internally from the hotel and from Princes Street. Further registrations are from 0900 Saturday in the Cargill Room on the ground floor.
ACCOMMODATION
As is normal at these conferences, you will be required to make your own arrangements. However, we have negotiated a special rate at the Southern Cross Hotel for the NZART Councillors and if you would like this same special rate, then it is available to you as well. This rate is for the newly redecorated Superior Room and has been discounted from $343.00 per night to $151.88 including GST. This is a huge bonus considering the 4 Star rating this hotel has and it is $50.00 less than the hotel’s normal corporate rate. Our website has other links to accommodation facilities in the city so, as is usual, the choice is yours from the cheaper style camping grounds to the luxurious hotels. Don’t delay, do it now and mention NZART Conference when you book
RESTAURANTS AND BARS
There are several located within the Southern Cross Hotel itself and these offer many styles and prices. Many more are situated within easy walking distance of the venue and Speights Ale House, to name just one, is only two minutes away. You are about five minutes walking from the Octagon where further choices will amaze you.
CASINO
This is located in the venue complex as well and where you are most welcome to add to the Otago economy. No official business will be conducted here!
AIR TRAVEL
Our enquiries reveal that no airline flying nationally is prepared to discuss any special group discounts. Due to all the deals they have available online it was suggested to us that you book this way. On checking online we have found some one–way special prices including a fare of $99.00 with Air New Zealand from Auckland to Dunedin.
CHANGE
It is proposed to have the AREC meeting following afternoon tea on the Saturday, 1 June, not on the Sunday morning as has been traditional. This should prove to be more convenient for many of you especially those who only wish to attend on the Saturday and it will also give you a chance to go to the other forums without missing this important event.
LOCAL REPEATERS
Our main repeater is VHF 690 (146.900) and the National System is UHF 9925 (439.925) with easy access in the city to Mt Cargill where these two are sited. Also available for your use are VHF 665 (146.650) and UHF 915 (439.150). The link to Queenstown is UHF 438.300 simplex and if you are in the Mosgiel area you can use UHF 438.200 simplex, which links back to 690.
PROPOSED BUS TRIP TO SHAG VALLEY
On Monday morning, June 2nd, we are considering a special trip by bus to Shag Valley Station Museum inland from Palmerston. Here, a memorial cairn has been erected to commemorate the radio contact made between Frank Bell ZL4A and Cecil Goyder G2SZ in the United Kingdom on the 18 October 1924. This radio contact was an event which attracted international media attention as the first round–the–world radio broadcast. There is much early radio history on this farm site and it is well worth a visit. There will be an extra cost for the bus and any lunch stop at Palmerston on the return trip. If you would like to participate in this exciting venture then please advise us by adding a note to your registration form or email us at conference@zl4aa.org.nz by May 16th, 2008. An announcement by May 20th will be made via our website as to whether this event will occur or not.
TO REGISTER
Please complete the form on the opposite page and return to us with your payment or photocopy it and then complete it and send it to us. Note that up to four instalment payments can be made but the first payment must be with your registration. Alternatively, go to our website and complete the PDF form but please follow the easy instructions.
