HF CONTESTS THIS WEEKEND 10-11 MAY 2008
Back from the VK4land visit and return to a culture shock insofar as
temperatures are concerned - 26'-30' C to damn near freezing conditions
here. No wonder I copped a heavy cold with attendant chest infection -
been like Brer Bruno with a blocked nose and maybe a bit more grumpy !!.
Took a 2m handheld with me and a supply (4) of charged batteries. Alas,
the Repeaters are not unlike those here, generally no signals, although
I did manage a QSO with a VK4 Foundation Licensee one afternoon on the
Sunshine Coast South Repeater.
Have had the odd listen on the R1000 from the comfort of the lounge and
can only say that band conditions did not really get me too excited.
This week's contesting activities are somewhat sparse, with the
VK/Transtasman 80m Phone Contest being the only local activity,
while the Volta WW RTTY Contest will probably have more appeal to
those interested in digital mode activities. However, next weekend
sees the running of NZART's oldest and probably the most challenging
Contest, wso now is the time to dust off the QRP gear, or practice
lowering the power levels of your usual rig ready to participate.
Although it is primarily of CW mode, the general of CW sending speed
of most contestants is at the lower end of contestiung CW, most
operators will reduce their speed further to accommodate those
who are participating with a slower speed.
Grateful thanks to Bill, ZL3NB for preparing and forwarding the Contests
This Weekend bulletins while I have been away. Very much appreciated Bill.

When : - 17 & 18 May 2008
Time :- 2000 NZST until 2300 NZST each evening
Band : - 80m
Power :- 5 watts maximum output
This contest was established in the early days of Amateur Radio in
NZ to
recognise the efficiency of the operator and their radio equipment.
To win this contest marks an operator who not only knows how to
obtain the most effectiveness from low power, but also one who
is most proficient in telegraphic communication.. The Sangster
Shield was presented to the amateurs of NZ by the Late Mr. Ralph
Sangster in 1927 for an annual competition to be won by the
station exhibiting the previously mentioned attributes.
Please refer to NZART Website :- http://www.nzart.org.nz/contests
, or Page 5-4of the NZART 2006/7 Callbook for the Contest Rules.
Updated information will be available from the Association’s Website.
CW is no longer a requirement for the acquisition of an Amateur
Radio Operator’s Licence both here and in the number of overseas
administrations. However, there has been a move, albeit on a
voluntary basis, for an increasing number of newly licensed hams
to gain proficiency in CW operation.
