List Guidelines (or Email Reflector)

List Rules

The purpose of the NZART’s Lists or Email Reflectors are provide areas of interest for – new members and members, of the association – to discuss issues or areas of interest to them and others, as well as sharing resources and experience.

The NZART Lists or Email Reflectors are a members–only area, one of the benefits of being a member of the association.
The only exception to this rule is the InfoLine list – which is open to all.

The lists provide a forum to ask questions of subject experts and keep up–to–date on matters of various interests to those subscribed to the lists. NZART provides the lists as a way for members to receive impart or just become involved in amateur radio.

NZART’s Lists are moderated

Each list has a specific purpose established around subject matter, content and/or topics.

List participants are encouraged to participate with their contributions to the list on subject areas either brought up by themselves, others or of general interest to other list users. Comments, suggestions, references, and ideas posted to the lists should serve as resources for enhancing the discussion topic and knowledge base of those reading it.

List subscribers are expected to follow the Netiquette rules posted below. Subscribers should include their name and callsign (if a transmitting member) at the end of each message.

NZART encourages open discourse and an exchange of information, ideas, and practices among all list subscribers. Differences in perspectives and ideas are common place, especially when conducted in the spirit of inquiry, curiosity, and mutual respect. Messages posted to the lists do not represent the views or opinions of the NZART, or the list moderator or webmaster.

Netiquette Rules

  • you may wish to introduce yourself to other list members when posting to the list for the first time.
  • the footer information (how subscribe or unsubscribe from the list) is not always displayed on all mail systems; therefore, including your name, callsign, or appropriate other information to clearly identify yourself as will better allow others to respond to your message.
  • be concise. Messages more than two screens in length are difficult for some participants to read. Shorter, to the point messages move the discussion along at a lively pace.
  • before you send a reply, consider whether it should go to everyone on the list or just to the person posting the message. If you think your reply will be of general interest, then send it to the list; if not, be careful to reply only to the message originator. When replying to an individual, make sure that person's email address is the only one appearing in the "To" box."
  • when you are replying to a posted message, it helps readers if you quote the part of the message (usually not the whole message) that you are replying to. All list readers will then respond to your message in the proper context. If the message thread gets too long, remove the older postings at the beginning of the thread.
  • if you are responding to a posting but want to change the topic of a discussion thread, remember to change the subject line in the email to give members information about the new direction in the conversation.
  • email messages typed in all capitals are considered shouting and in discussion forums are considered rude, so please be considerate and for emphasis use *emphasis* or _emphasis_ instead of all capitals.
  • many of us have found that learning is promoted by dialogue in a spirit of inquiry, curiosity, and mutual respect. Please conduct your discussions in that spirit on this list.
  • comments made in jest on a mailing list may not always appear that way to other readers. Sarcasm rarely works on the internet and is often misunderstood. Please be careful using humour on the lists.

Guidelines – Webmaster and Moderator


What is the Webmasters role in List Administration?
It is the responsibility of the webmaster to ensure the smooth running of the software interface and technical aspects of the list and the lists well being in general.

When to contact the Webmaster?
  • You receive a server error or pages do not work.
  • You forgot your registered email address in the list and cannot post emails to the list.
  • You cannot unsubscribe from the list for some reason after following the guide lines for doing so.
  • You have been threatened or attacked in the list in a personal way by another user.

What is the Moderators role in List Administration?

Moderators are members invited by the webmaster to help with the administration of the lists. They have volunteered their valuable time to help keep the lists tidy, clean and on topic.

What a moderator does?
  • They control the discussion threads and if appropriate can request that they be stopped or be taken off line.
  • Help you if you have a problem.

Do the moderators make the guidelines?
No, the moderators do not make the guidelines. The Webmaster makes the guidelines. If you have a problem with them contact the Webmaster. All members (including Moderators and Webmaster) must abide by the guidelines.

When to contact a moderator?
  • If you are concerned about a thread or someone's behaviour.
  • You have made a dreadful mistake and don't know how to fix it.
  • You have a question or need advice.
When a Moderator takes actions what are the guidelines?
  • If list members are not prepared to stop or take a discussion thread offline, they can then issue a warning for the list member to stop. This first warning can be followed by a penalty of one week list removal from posting.
  • If after the first warning the list member continues the thread or starts a new one (on a similar topic), but is still not prepared to stop the existing thread or new thread then the member may be banned from all NZART reflectors from that point on, not just the one. Once banned from all lists the status may be permanent.

Who will pass your concerns to NZART Council to review the process
The Webmaster’s review is normally the final review of process actions taken and no guarantee that list membership will be returned; however, a final appeal may be made as outlined above, if the review process has not been followed or you believe that you have been unfairly treated.

When not to contact a moderator?
If you ever have a problem with something that a moderator has done you should contact the Webmaster.
