Studholme South Canterbury: National System Repeater

It's with regret, I must advise that this repeater, a link in the National System South Island, is currently NOT performing as usual. Trustee's advised Branch 34 members at this evenings monthly meeting, that the transmitter has depowered to the point of breaking the link, especially south to Dunedin. As usual this has happened during a patch of BAD weather. The Branch Trustee's will attempt to access the high altitude site later in the week. Please advise anyone not on this list who may be attempting contacts in the Mid & Lower South Island. I will advise when repairs have been completed. David Hetherington ZL3UDH Secretary Branch 34

Marketing Ideas Forum at RSGB Convention 2009

At the RSGB Convention, to be held from 9 to 11 October, there will be Forum where visitors will get the chance to discuss any ideas they may have to market amateur radio. Amateur radio in the UK needs more people to take part; from young to old, experienced and inexperienced alike, if it is to prosper in the coming years. The hobby must continue to attract these new people so, in our current consumer-driven culture, we need to promote it in much better and more coordinated ways than we've been doing. We need to generate a 21st Century image and drive the amateur radio brand more into the public eye as a worthwhile hobby. This is what marketing is all about. Under the guidance of Alan Messenger, G0TLK, this Marketing Ideas Forum will enable active radio amateurs to air their ideas for what they think could be done to attract and keep new people into the hobby or to bounce around ideas suggested by others. It promises to be quite a lively discussion!

IT professionals will not drop Windows XP quietly (if ever)

Properly not everyone would be interested in this topic, but as we all have computers and operating systems, it does pay to see what is around the corner, even if it is to see what the next upgrade is likely to cost, or do we hold on to what we have now. From author Mark Kaelin in the TechRepublic Newsletter "Windows XP Tips at TechRepublic.com [newsletters@techrepublic.online.com]" In a series of poll questions, IT professionals made it quite clear they were not interested in migrating away from Windows XP. What do the results mean for your organization? A couple of weeks ago, I asked a series of poll questions about Microsoft Windows XP. That single blog post lead to close to 300 separate posts in the corresponding discussion thread. The poll results are very informative and definitely give us an indication about where the TechRepublic membership stands with regard to a potential operating system migration.
