The New Zealand DX Hall of Fame

During the past few months a group of Kiwi DXers from the Kiwi DX Group have worked to set up The New Zealand DX Hall of Fame to honour those outstanding ZL DXers who have excelled in our radio sport hobby over many years. The panel of judges, Ken McCormack ZL1AIH, Duncan McMahon ZL3JT and Bill Carney

ZL3NB have been nominated to the panel for three years.

Their first task was to draw up a long list of possibles from which the first three ZL DXers to be elected to the Hall of Fame were chosen. After much deliberation the judges were unanimous in their selection and have elected the first three ZL radio amateurs to the New Zealand DX Hall of Fame for 2009. Their individual citations are below.

Roy Jackson - ZL4BO

This 1st ever award recognizes Roy's extraordinary and unselfish contribution to the sport of Amateur Radio DXing in New Zealand. His DXing skills over many decades are legendary and the inspiration and help that he has given to other ZL DXers has been immeasurable. His personal achievement in the ARRL DXCC program is outstanding and he has been at the top of his game for decades.

We wish Roy well in the future and hope that he will enjoy having this award on his wall

Ron Wright - ZL1AMO

The election of Ron as the 2nd inductee to the NZ DX Hall of Fame recognizes Ron's extraordinary and unselfish contribution to the sport of Amateur Radio DXing in New Zealand. Ron was also elected to the CQ DX Hall of Fame in 1985. His DXpedition exploits around the Pacific over many decades are legendary and he has enabled a generation of amateur radio operators worldwide to obtain that elusive new country. His personal achievement in the ARRL DXCC program is outstanding and his contribution to INDEXA and DXing internationally has been immense.

We wish Ron well in the future and hope that he will enjoy having the award plaque on his wall.

Jock White ZL2GX - (SK)

To the Family of Jock White

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that Jock White, ZL2GX has been elected to the New Zealand DX Hall of Fame.

This 3rd award ever made recognizes Jock's extraordinary and unselfish contribution to the sport of Amateur Radio DXing in New Zealand. His radio DXing skills over many decades are legendary and the inspiration and help that he gave to other ZL DXers has been immeasurable. His personal achievement in the ARRL DXCC program in being the first to achieve 300 countries is outstanding. He was an outstanding ZL radio amateur for decades.

We wish your family well in the future and hope that you will enjoy knowing how accomplished the great New Zealand DXer was.

We offer our heartiest congratulations to these outstanding ZL radio amateurs who have been elected to inaugural New Zealand DX Hall of Fame.

Thank you to Ken ZL1AIH, Duncan ZL3JT and Bill ZL3NB for their work in selecting the inductees. I looked at the long list of ZL DXers that was initially drawn up and was amazed at the DXing abilities and history of these fine ZL DXers. It was a formidable job for the panel to reach a unanimous decision but the amateurs chosen are the cream of New Zealand Amateurs. I will be looking forward to the next three inductees in 2010.

Get Ready for World Amateur Radio Day on April 18

Each year on the anniversary of its founding, April 18, the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) marks World Amateur Radio Day. On this 83rd anniversary of its inaugural meeting in Paris, the IARU dedicates World Amateur Radio Day to the future of Amateur Radio with its theme, "Amateur Radio: A Foundation for Technical Knowledge."

It is no secret that many professionals in the field of radio, TV, communications and electronics have started their technical education as young radio amateurs. Although Amateur Radio has a different face nowadays - Digital Communications, Voice over Internet Protocol, Satellite up-and downlinks and more --it is even of greater value as a foundation for technical knowledge for youngsters. And much more --it is and should be used as a unique attraction for future young radio amateurs.

World Amateur Radio Day provides an occasion to promote and publicize Amateur Radio. Amateur Radio clubs are encouraged to find suitable ways of celebrating World Amateur Radio Day. Many ways can be considered --inviting youngsters to visit radio clubs, showing up on the air with a special call sign, organizing a station in a public area with media coverage or publicly honoring amateurs who have made significant contributions. Whatever method is chosen, clubs should think about publishing a press release for the media, giving the background to World Amateur Radio Day and promoting the value of Amateur Radio as a foundation for a technical career.

The ARRL will be very pleased to hear how Amateur Radio clubs chose to celebrate World Amateur Radio Day. Share your stories and photos with us, so that they may be shared with the Amateur Radio community. The North Canterbury Amateur Radio Club 40th Anniversary Award

Please note the correction to the dates. The award runs from 1st Feb to 28th Feb 2009. Not as published in December Break-In.

This award is sponsored by Branch 68 to commemorate the 40 years that the club has been in existence.

1. The award runs from 1st -28th February 2009 inclusive. It is available to all Amateurs and short-wave listeners.

2. Contacts may be made on any band or mode BUT each station may be worked ONCE for each application.

3. New Zealand stations require 15 points to be made up from the list below.

(a) Compulsory contact with Special Event Station ZL6RR -five (5) points.

(b) Branch 68 Committee Members -three (3) points.

4. Overseas station requires only 6 points, calculated as above, and do not have to make a compulsory contact.

The next contest is the DX Weekend Contest, on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of February 2009.

The operating times are: Saturday 1700 to 2300 NZT and Sunday 0700 to 1300 NZT.
