Debby Says...

Membership promotion for Branches

At Council's face to face meeting in Auckland, it was agreed that a membership drive needs to be implemented and the sooner the better.

The closest people to the coal face are branch members and you all, are, have been or will be one, of these people. You are aware of your community and it's people and probably the best informed of what will work to encourage new candidates and members to the Association.

In recognition of branches encouraging new members to the Association, and for every new member's application submitted BY A BRANCH, the branch will be refunded half the annual subscription of the new member on receipt of that application. This applies only to one whole years subscription of $95 and cannot be used in conjunction with a new amateurs application for a call sign, as they will automatically receive one-year subscription free.

The definition of a new member to the Association is one who has never been a member nor belonged a period of 5 years or more.

If you need more information on this, please do not hesitate to contact either your Council representative or myself.

Subscriptions for 2011

Included in the next issue of Break In, due out at the beginning of August, you will receive your annual subscription invoice.

Please pay this by the end of November 2010 to be eligible for the $15 rebate, or alternatively if you are wanting to make regular payments, please contact me for details on what you need to include in your payment reference details.

Please remember anyone wishing to pay monthly does not qualify for the early payment rebate.

Did You Notice?

Did You Notice that there was a request from NZART Council, for a volunteer(s) to help with information for amateurs that are coming to New Zealand for The Rugby World Cup 2011?. 'Infoline 208' and 'The-Rugby-World-Cup.pdf' have the full details of what is required. These two documents can be found on the NZART Web at:

http://www.nzart.org.nz/pdf/2010/The-Rugby-World-Cup.pdf, and

RSM Call Book Database is on The NZART Website

The NZART Administration Liaison Officer, Don Wallace ZL2TLL, has obtained a pre-Call Book copy of the RSM Call Book Database that is on the NZART Website, but sadly not to stay ED.

The purpose of this is to give people the ability to check their own and their friends listings and for the person with the entry in error to get in touch with RSM to correct any errors. This will then give us a more accurate Call Book.

Details can be updated either online at:

(you will need your log in details) or by phoning RSM on 0508 776 463.

For Silent Keys, there is a form available at

and this can be filled in and posted to Debby at HQ (PO Box 40-525 Upper Hutt 5140) with relevant supporting documentation by a person authorised to do so.

For further information, please see the help files online at:

or contact RSM as above

Petition to Prohibit AR DV & Internet Access in France

For all European Citizen.

Please fill in your personal information, to participate to our Petition. This petition is open for all European people (Art. 194). DR@F French society will present it to European Parliament in name of all people who signed it.

Our complaint make reference following facts:

1) ARCEP French Local Regulator Authority doesn't apply European Directive 1999/5/CE, as "radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment and the mutual recognition of their conformity", but for national security reason to prohibit Amateur Service Operators in France to use Digital Voice and Internet Access for experiment and individual training and doesn't respect Annex I, ham-radio operator that are building their own radio aren't regarded by this law.

2) ARCEP French Local Regulator Authority don't respect Directive 2009/140/CE art. 1 - paragraph b) about fundamental right to access to Internet Services from final users.

FCC Archive Has ZL Information and a Frequency Standard 1930 Style

Dear Jamie,

You may find the following link interesting enough for NZART web page:-

At pages 21 to 23 inclusive the FCC lists (as Australians!) ZL amateur and experimental callsigns as at April 1930.

As a bonus, on part of page 23 and over to page 24 it gives a detailed description of a frequency standard, early 1930s style.

(How I found this was that a new licensee asked about the history of Auckland Grammar radio club, with the clue that the science master had the surname of Salt.I recognised this as Gordon (G McB) Salt.He later became NZART President 1960-1962.

G McB Salt plus Google produced the above link, but I had to click over all pages to find the actual entry.Included in the list of callsigns are ZL1AA (then Norm Edwards, now Auckland Branch), ZL1FZ (Auckland Grammar club) and ZL1XI (Auckland University club)

Please use this information or pass it on as you see fit.

Comment: The significance of radio science in New Zealand education seems to have faded over the years.

Thank you Selwyn for the interesting find. I have extracted the pages from the pdf file and these can be found at:

First Half of 2010 Sees Upswing in New Amateur Radio Licenses in The USA

With more than 18,000 new Amateur Radio licenses issued in the first half of this year -- 18, 270 to be exact -- 2010 is shaping up to be a banner year for Amateur Radio. So far, the number of new licenses issued by the FCC in 2010 is outpacing the January-June 2009 totals by almost 8.5 percent; at this time last year, the FCC had issued 16,844 new licenses....

CO2 and Collapsing Thermosphere . . . ? Hmmm . . . Might be of Interest

If indeed CO2 does have an influence, would methane also have an influence, and if so, would the Gulf disaster releases of methane, plus the Siberian traps releases of methane due to global warming . . . create something more . . . ?? Seems to be opportunity for scientists to investigate further . . . bob g

A Puzzling Collapse of Earth's Upper Atmosphere

July 15, 2010: NASA-funded researchers are monitoring a big event in our planet's atmosphere. High above Earth's surface where the atmosphere meets space, a rarefied layer of gas called "the thermosphere" recently collapsed and now is rebounding again.
