Deceased Amateurs

Several members have noted that the names of some deceased Amateurs are still shown in the MED's licence database. NZART has offered to facilitate the removal of deceased Amateurs from the MED's licence database. Please advise NZART Headquarters of the details of the deceased Amateurs, before the 29th of September 2006.

Five Radio Amateurs Now Aboard ISS

Five Radio Amateurs Now Aboard ISS; Power Upgrade, PCSat2 Retrieval Set (11 September 2006) –– The arrival of the shuttle Atlantis crew at the International Space Station today has raised the number of radio amateurs now aboard the space station to five. Greeting the six Atlantis astronauts as they entered the ISS at 1230 UTC were Expedition 13 crew members Commander and Russian cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, RV3BS, US astronaut Jeff Williams, KD5TVQ, and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Reiter, DF4TR. The shuttle linked up with the ISS a couple of hours earlier, following its oft–scrubbed launch from Kennedy Space Center on September 9.

Battle for Ham Bands

Amateur Radio Societies Want Broadcasters to Take their Battle off Ham Bands (7 September 2006) As the so–called "Firedragon" jammer continues to transmit in one or more Amateur Radio bands, three International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 3 member–societies so far have appealed to the jammer's target to move elsewhere. The Firedragon's all–music transmissions from the People's Republic of China (PRC) appear aimed at blocking the much–weaker broadcasts of the clandestine "Sound of Hope" (SOH), located outside the PRC. Responding via e–mail September 5 to an inquiry from IARU Region 1 Monitoring System (IARUMS) Vice Coordinator Uli Bihlmayer, DJ9KR, the SOH said its supporters use various avenues "including Amateur Radio frequencies" to get their message into the PRC.

Info–Line No: 122 (3 September 2006) NZART's Headquarters Info–Line Issue Number 122 – General Secretary, Debby Morgan ZL2TDM – Sight Impaired Amateur Radio Examination Candidates: I have had a number of queries recently for Sight impaired people who wish to sit the Amateur Exam. Can any supervisors who have been in this situation please contact me.

ZK prefix for NZART to Administer

A document giving the rules about callsigns, PIB46, is expected to be published by MED RSM in the near future. Full details will have to wait until publication but verbal approval has been given for one change to be implemented now. The ZK prefix has been relinquished by the Cook Islands and it is now to become available for NZART to administer. The intention is that NZART in turn will permit the ZK1 to ZK9 series (or an appropriate part of the same) to be allocated for use by AREC replacing the ZL E series that has been used throughout the long history of AREC. Details of this arrangement will be advised to NZART members in due course.

NZ Amateur use of two 5 MHz Defence frequencies

Arrangements have been made with the licensee for AREC to be permitted access to two spot frequencies near 5 MHz. The agreed "Rules for Access" are on the sheet attached. This is a new form of "sharing" of a licence by amateurs. Please note that it is requested that reports be made about the use of these two spots. It is known that at an appropriate time in the future, IARU proposes to seek an amateur band around 5 MHz. Having a collection of reports on NZ's experience will be of assistance at that time.
